About Us

We are a close, coordinated team of small-scale explorers, with passion for being outdoors, and finding or making new things.
We are led by the idea that EVERYONE should have more mini adventures, relearn forgotten skills, AND enjoy more time outside!
We want to share what we know, and inspire you to share it with others.

Our experience spans stormy nights on the moors, gentle rock-hopping in summer streams, woodland meanders, fresh-cut woodcrafting, and friendly, fireside group meals.
We have the enthusiasm and knowledge to provide an off-grid experience from a base camp with walking route options, to teach fundamental, traditional outdoor skills.
Our aim is to seed inspiration, confidence and balance, for whatever's around the next corner.

Our Origin...

From years enjoying free-roaming hikes as a child, to ongoing hikes and camps with adult friends, the idea of Trex Explore became increasingly clear, stemming from a desire for sharing and encouraging outdoor freedom, with companions, and for finding interesting things on the way (like "what is that plant and what can we do with it", "what's on and over that hill", and "who do you think was here 100 years ago").

The purpose and driver of early "outings" being for better mental welfare, taking opportunities to reset, and to regain an understanding and connection with our natural environment.
Our skills and interests varied, yet all focussed on understanding the resources around us for outdoor living and off-grid survival, such as foraging, shelter and campfires, and we also realised we needed each others' motivation.

Two ideas kept occuring, during the initial established regular outings to low-key campsites around the UK with groups of extended friends (who all enjoyed a small hike, thought-provoking discussion, and time sat around a campfire whilst shared knowledge and skills):

  1. that more people would enjoy the same thing (but maybe didn't quite know where to start, or didn't have time to arrange)
  2. and that this was a passion which we enjoyed sharing (with the comment of "what if this was an actual day-job").

In 2021, Trex became a limited company, to be able to offer "wild guide and bushcraft" expertise officially, with insurance cover, first aid, and adjacent skill training via the Institute of Outdoor Learning.
This also introduced a wider community of bushcrafters, explorers, craftspeople, and teachers, to continue professional development with.

We are proud to offer a wide and flexible set of outdoor skills + learning experiences, and to arrange activities and outings in some truly awe-inspiring UK landscapes.
We have been compared to being "like forest school or scouts for adults", which sounds good to us!

If we can teach you some primitive and forgotten skills, which inspire you to spend more time off-grid outdoors, then we think we're doing exactly the right thing.

We enable you to enjoy new adventures!

Our rationale, purpose and what we think makes the ideal excursion...

1. Explore...
...go somewhere new, or in a different way!

We endeavour to make your outing fun and to introduce unique perspectives with small personal challenges.

2. Back to basics interactions...
...small social groups plus natural environment.

A chance to switch off, slow down and appreciate the world around you, with no pressure.

We don't insist that you abandon your smartphone entirely, but we do think it's best to enjoy the wilds without having screens always visible.

3. Freedom...
...to go, to think, to do or to just be.

We enjoy and encourage physical and mental freedom.
Our aim is to enable that as your guides.
Play, pause, have fun, relax!

It rejuvinates us all and sparks new thoughts.

4. Fundamental Know-how...
...picking up forgotten skills and knowledge.

Reminders to pause and look at what's around us, and reintroduction of some forgotten, basic skills of human-kind, all of which are actually enjoyable and rewarding.
It could be practical fire making, navigation, plant and tree ID or how to play simple games together.
